Honda Airbag Recall
What is the recall about?
In 2008 a recall was issued for defective airbags manufactured by Takata and used in Honda vehicles. Some of those airbags can explode unexpectedly and contain metal shards which have injured hundreds and killed 6. As of today 5.4 Million Hondas have been recalled for their potentially lethal airbags. Takata is being fined $14,000 per day for alleged refusal to cooperate with federal investigators and Honda was fined $70 Million for withholding accident and defect data.

What are the Dangers?
The defective airbags can deploy unexpectedly and forcefully from excessive pressure. The airbags can also contain metal shrapnel and chemicals that shoot metal fragments at drivers and passengers. The risk of explosion increases in regions of high in humidity or temperature.
These airbags are inflated by a small explosion based on a common compound found in fertilizer which is encased in a metal canister. Exposure to moisture, unstable materials, and failure to follow regulations is what has turned this canister into dangerous shrapnel.
Even though the first recall was issued in 2008, people are dying. The most recent death was in January 2015. 15 Million people are still driving defective vehicles with only 12% of all recalls in the US repaired. One driver who was killed had purchased the car used in the last year and may have never received a recall notice.
